Safety
When to stop reading and get help.
Being paid and not working can be harder on a man than it looks from outside. If this has stopped being an odd stretch of time and become something worse, this is the more useful page.
Stop now and contact emergency services if
You are in immediate danger, you cannot keep yourself safe, you are having thoughts of ending your life, someone in your home has made you afraid, or you are worried about a child's safety. Use your local emergency number, and tell someone nearby if you can.
The AI guide here cannot help with any of that. It cannot contact anyone, cannot monitor you, and will not try to hold a conversation that needs a human being.
If you are having thoughts of suicide
Losing your role, your routine and your standing at the same time — while still being paid, which makes it harder to explain to anyone — is one of the circumstances in which this happens to men in the middle of working life. It is not weakness, and it is not permanent.
Your local emergency number if you are in immediate danger. Otherwise a crisis line, your doctor, or someone you trust, in that order of speed. Free crisis lines exist in almost every country, staffed by people who have heard this exact situation before.
This site publishes no telephone numbers, because a wrong number is worse than none and they change. Search for the crisis line in your own country, or ask your doctor.
If the days have stopped having a shape
Not getting up. Not leaving the house at all. Drinking earlier than you used to. Days you cannot account for. Weeks that have gone somewhere.
This is common in paid leave and rarely mentioned, because the money still arriving makes a man feel he has no right to struggle. Worth raising with a doctor rather than managing alone, and worth telling one person you trust before it has gone on for months.
If money has become the emergency
Pay may be continuing and the problem may still be real — a mortgage that only worked with a bonus, debt that has stopped being arithmetic and started being dread, or a leave period ending with nothing behind it.
This needs a debt adviser, and it needs one earlier than most men ask. Free, independent debt advice exists in most countries and is usually faster and more effective than people expect. Advisers can often do things with creditors that you cannot do yourself. Do not take advice about it from an AI, including this one.
If the emergency is legal, or has a deadline
An agreement in front of you with a date on it, a disciplinary or grievance process running, a suspension you believe is unfair, or a restriction you are about to breach. None of that is reflective and none of it belongs here.
That is an employment lawyer, or a free employment advice service, and it is time-sensitive. Nothing on this site will tell you what your position is, and the page about your contract exists to say exactly that.
If drinking has become how you fill the day
Unstructured time and free afternoons make this easier than it was, and men rarely mention it. It is worth raising with a doctor rather than handling alone. If you are physically dependent on alcohol, stopping suddenly without medical advice can be dangerous — seizures, hallucinations, severe confusion or frightening shaking need urgent medical help, not willpower.
What the AI guide will do
If anything on this page appears in what you write, the guide will stop the reflective conversation, say so plainly, and point you here. It will not diagnose you, assess how bad it is, ask you to rate how you feel, or carry on as though the conversation were about how to use your time.
Safety replies are never counted against your daily allowance, never shortened, and never withheld.
General information, not medical, legal or financial advice, and not a crisis service. Nothing on this site is monitored by a person.
